July 30, 2009 - PRLog -- The green revolution is on. People are getting more mindful of the dire effects that we have been inflicting to our planet. Scientists are now finding ways to reduce their carbon footprint on the earth. There had been renewed calls for the use of renewable energy to power our planet. One of these is the use of solar energy and right now, more and more people are installing solar panels to generate their own electricity.

Maybe you are one of them who are considering having one but are still adamant if that would be a good choice for you. Let us weigh in the advantages and disadvantages of having one right at your home. I hate to spoil the excitement but I'm going to tell you that the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.

One of the advantages of having solar panels at home is that you would be generating your own electricity. That means that you won't be paying anything to any local utility. You won't be affected by any increase in electric rates. That alone would give your hundred of dollars in savings each month.

One more benefit that you can get from solar panel is that it requires almost no maintenance at all. You just have to make sure that it is installed on a place wherein it can function at its optimal performance and it can give you with clean energy that would last for almost 50 years.

Of course, the environmental benefit that we would get from it is the most important. If everybody would just use it, the consumption of fossil fuels will be greatly reduced which in effect decrease greenhouse gas emissions. It would be one small step but it would have very positive effect on our environment.

Aside from that, if everyone in this country would use this kind of technology, it would also make us energy independent for we won't need to import our energy from other countries. Thus, saving precious dollars that could otherwise go to other important needs like health care and education.

But there is only one disadvantage that may discourage a lot of people from using this very promising technology; the initial cost is too expensive. One small unit of solar panels could cost tens of thousands of dollars which is just too much for an average American that earns around $50,000 a year. But that shouldn't be a hindrance in deciding if you have to get one. What you should be thinking about is the benefits you'll be having in the long run.

But the expensive costs of having one could become a thing of the past. Right now, more and more companies are developing cheaper solar panels that have higher efficiency. This means that solar panels are becoming more and more affordable and in the near future, almost everyone can afford to have one at their homes and benefit a lot from this wonderful clean and green technology.
