July 15, 2009 - PRLog -- CellAntenna Corporation applauds the recent leadership shown by the Department of Corrections of twenty six states and the cities of Washington, DC and Philadelphia in petitioning the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to allow cell phone jamming in American prisons.  The driving force the petition has been South Carolina’s Director of the Department of Corrections, Jon Ozmint who sees cell phone jamming as the most effective cost-efficient method to combat illegal cell phones possible.  Currently federal law enacted in 1934 prohibits correctional officers from using jamming equipment in correctional facilities to jam illegal cell phones that smuggled into prisons for prisoner use.  CellAntenna has been leading the drive to get this law changed.

“The issue of illegal cell phones by inmates in American prisons is one the gravest threats to public safety,” said Howard Melamed, President and CEO of CellAntenna Corporation.  “Officers and personnel in our correctional facilities face the challenge in stopping prisoners from using illegal cell phones to commit crimes and endangering the public. Jamming of illegal cell phones is the only cost effective proven solution to this crisis without further endangering law enforcement and the public.  I commend and applaud the leadership that the various signatories are demonstrating on this petition and hope that the FCC and Congress act upon it.”

Cell phone jamming has been proven to be cost-efficient with the budget restrictions that affecting state governments and accurate in shutting down cell signals to illegal phones.  Last year, CellAntenna demonstrated for the South Carolina Department of Corrections that full magnitude of what cell phone jamming can achieve without disrupting normal prison operations and outside communications.  The South Carolina Department of Corrections is spearheading the petition under the direction of its Director Jon Ozmint.

The cell phone industry despite this continues along with CTIA oppose CellAntenna and correctional officers in their efforts to authorize cell phone jamming.   CellAntenna believes that the petition released yesterday is an attempt to overcome these objections and demonstrates conclusively that correctional officers who are on the frontline in dealing with this crisis recognize that cell phone jamming is the best way to stop illegal cell phones in prisons and protect the public.
