Boating Couple Hangs Up Sailing Gloves and Picks Up Publishing

Carolina Currents Magazine announces new owners, Doug and Sheryl Mayle. After a two-year sojourn sailing the islands of the Caribbean, this cruising couple has returned home to the Carolinas and has taken the helm of their favorite boating magazine.

June 29, 2009 - PRLog -- CHARLESTON, S.C.- Carolina Currents Magazine, a free publication for boating  enthusiasts and everyone interested in the waterfront regions of North and South Carolina, announces new owners. Doug and Sheryl Mayle will officially take the helm starting with the generation of the September/October issue. It is bound to be quite an adjustment for this cruising couple, as they have spent the past two years enjoying the laid-back lifestyle offered by sailing the islands of the Caribbean.
Previous owners, Rob and Jo Lucey, recently listed the business for sale and word reached Doug and Sheryl as they sat at anchor in Bermuda, a stopover on their return trip from down island. During a long passage from Bermuda back to the United States, the couple had plenty of time to think about the possibilities of working together and publishing a regional nautical interest magazine.
“We’ve lived for two years on a tiny boat, always within 35 feet of one another. We sailed through storms and suffered the heat of the tropics together," Doug said after making landfall. "After all that, we simply cannot imagine being apart to pursue separate jobs.” This new role for them will offer continued togetherness and an avenue for the application of their passion for boating and love of the Carolinas.
Sheryl grew up in North Carolina, and together she and Doug learned to sail in the waters near Oriental, the "Sailing Capital" of the state. In an effort to get better acquainted with the sister state to the south, Doug and Sheryl have established the publishing company's new office in South Carolina. “I’ve always wanted to live in Charleston,” said Sheryl, “and now we can walk to the waterfront from our new office.”
Time in the office will be limited for this energetic and enthusiastic duo. Much of their time will be spent visiting the many waterfront areas of North and South Carolina. “We’ll be working in areas where others go to vacation and relax,” explained Doug. “You couldn’t ask for a better geographical assignment.”
Rob and Jo Lucey launched Carolina Currents in November 2006, and they generated the first few issues while still living aboard their boat, Sea Spell. Rob and Jo will continue to be associated with the magazine in a consultative role through the end of this year, ensuring a smooth transition to the new owners.
Anticipating a seamless handoff of the publishing responsibilities, Doug and Sheryl will continue to distribute thousands of glossy full-color copies of this entertaining and informative magazine to marinas, shipyards, ship's stores, boat shows and other nautical outlets around the inland and coastal waterfront regions of both states, providing the best means for boaters to remain connected and for businesses to reach boaters throughout the Carolinas.
Visit the magazine’s website at:  www.carolinacurrents.com or pick up a copy of this free magazine at one of nearly 700 locations across the Carolinas.
