Further calls for first aid to become part of the curriculum in English and Scottish schools - This time it is the St John Ambulance Service who is speaking out.

It is a debate that has been going on for quite some time, with one leading organisation speaking out after the other, all calling for the same thing – First aid to be taught to children in schools.

Following a survey they carried out of more than 1500 school children (of whom only three out of ten replied they would know how to help in an emergency) the St. John Ambulance have taken their concerns to government ministers and are pushing for the tuition of first aid to become mandatory.  As it stands, first aid is only an option in English and Scottish schools whereas it has been compulsory in Ireland and Wales for some time.  The government has said that it intends to bring England into line by 2011.

The charities survey revealed that of all school pupils asked, 69% would not know what to do but that 72% would like to learn first aid skills.  The UK falls way behind its European neighbours with regard to knowledge of first aid, in some countries up to 80% of people have first aid skills with only 7% in the UK.

Where first aid courses or tuition is not available, basic knowledge can still be obtained from first aid manuals and instruction leaflets.  Whilst these will not replace full situational based training, they can offer guidelines and theory based knowledge.
