The Department of Family Services, in collaboration with the Prince George’s County Domestic Violence Coordinating Council, the Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault and Prince George’s Community College, presents the Saartjie Project in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The Saartjie (pronounced sar-kay) Project is a growing collective of artists and activists, who utilize performance art to explore the black female form, create dialogue and promote healing across communities.
The Saartjie Project will perform a 60-minute theatrical production infusing song, dance and spoken word at Prince George’s Community College, Rennie Forum on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at 7 p.m. Doors will open at 6 p.m. with light refreshments and networking and the performance will start promptly at 7 p.m. The performance will be followed by a 15-minute facilitated talk-back session between the audience and the cast. The purpose of the performance is to bring awareness to the issue of sexual assault and recognize how some forms of the media influence sexual and economic exploitation of women of color.
