April 13, 2009 - PRLog -- Sherman Oaks, California -- Members of the Rotary Club of Sherman Oaks Sunset, joined by other community volunteers, will collect food donations for the Valley Food Bank, clean up Van Nuys Sherman Oaks Park, and also plant a new tree atop "Rotary Hill" at the Park on Saturday, April 25, 2009 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., as part of a community volunteer day for Rotarians throughout the world.  Rotarians at Work Day has been designated as an international community service event for all Rotary Club members to be working in service of their home communities.  It is estimated that over 70,000 Rotarians will be working on the same day, across the globe, including hundreds in the San Fernando Valley at various Club projects and sites.

Club President Nancy Schmidt said, “The Club's Van Nuys Sherman Oaks Park project is important to the community and the Sherman Oaks Sunset Rotary Club is pleased to be a part of making it happen.  That’s what Rotary is all about.  'Service Above Self' is a motto that Rotarians have lived by for more than a century."  The project includes planting a new tree, cleaning up the park, and most importantly collecting donations of non-perishable food.  The result of the day of service will be a cleaner park today, a wonderful shade tree in the future, and immediate hope for the less fortunate in the San Fernando Valley who need the food the Club can collect.

Los Angeles City Councilmember and Controller-Elect Wendy Greuel introduced a Resolution in City Council proclaiming April 25, 2009 "Rotarians At Work Day" in the entire City of Los Angeles. "I'm so pleased to partner with the Sherman Oaks Sunset Rotary for Rotarians At Work Day. The club's work with the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission and Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks Park will undoubtedly have a positive impact in Sherman Oaks and beyond. This Rotary Club continues to be an outstanding model for others with their exemplary service to their community."

“Rotary Clubs throughout our District are doing similar activities for their communities," Schmidt went on to say.  "There are Rotarians from Woodland Hills to Burbank and from Santa Clarita Valley all the way up Bishop working for the betterment of the communities they serve.  Making these projects happen on the same day only points out how important community service is to the places where we live, work and play.  We are proud to be Rotarians.”

There are 36 Rotary Clubs throughout District 5260, in the San Fernando, Santa Clarita, Antelope, and Owens Valleys of California.  Rotary membership is available to all adults who are motivated to conduct their lives within high ethical standards and to serve their fellow Human beings.

The Rotary Club of Sherman Oaks Sunset, the youngest in the District, was founded in October of 2007, while Rotary has been serving the world since 1905.  It meets weekly at Denny's on Sepulveda and Burbank Boulevards.  The Club includes business and community leaders in Sherman Oaks, and recently welcomed United States Congressman Brad Sherman as an Honorary Rotarian.  For more information see www.sosrotary.org.
