March 25, 2009 - PRLog -- Unlike many of the other drugs that most consider "bad" or "highly addictive," meth (or methamphetamine) is not derived from a natural substance.  Meth is 100% synthetic and is made in professional and home-built laboratories all over the country.  Methamphetamine is related to amphetamine, but its affect on a person's body and brain is more intense and the drug is far more addictive than other types of amphetamine.  Meth addiction is serious.  There are millions of people all over the United States who seek drug addiction treatment for meth addiction every day.

Meth addiction is similar to but more intense than many other types of stimulants like cocaine and the previously mentioned amphetamines. Over the course of meth's history it has been used as an over the counter appetite suppressant, nasal decongestant and "mild" stimulant (similar to No Doz or other types of "keep me awake" drugs that you can purchase in a pharmacy).  It did not take long before people were using it recreationally.  When it was discovered that over the counter decongestants and antihistamines contained some of the major ingredients of meth (pseudoephedrine and ephedrine), the drug's popularity exploded.

One of the things that makes meth addiction so dangerous is its addictive property.  A person can experience physical cravings for meth after a single use.  Meth addiction has a lasting and almost immediate effect on the body's central nervous system.  When a person uses meth, he will experience a burst of energy and euphoria that is ultimately followed by depression and paranoia.  Meth addicts experience intense withdrawal systems because of the lasting damage that even a single use of the drug can have on the meth addict's brain.

A meth addict is known in scientific circles as a "high intensity" abuser.  In common circles he might be called a "speed freak."  A meth drug addict will focus solely on not ever coming down off of a methamphetamine high and as time goes on he will require more and higher doses of meth to get the same high he experienced in his early days of using.  When a person is high on meth he is "tweaking" and it is never a good idea to try to confront a tweaking meth addict because he will most likely be unpredictable and could end up being very violent.  Meth addicts can be very dangerous because the usual tools for "coming down" will only intensify the addict's "tweaking."  Alcohol, for example, only takes away the tweaker's inhibitions, making him even more dangerous to be around.

Thankfully it is possible to get drug addiction treatment for meth addiction.  Many meth addicts find solace in methadone clinics where they are given medication to curb the cravings for the drug and lessen the symptoms of withdrawal.  For many meth addicts, the only way to wean them off of their drug is to find a drug addiction treatment program that offers this type of medical treatment.  Meth addiction can be treated at both in-patient drug treatment programs and out patient addiction recovery programs.
