During this interview, Bill Bartmann discussed the body image issues among women, men and children. “Women are the most critical of their bodies,” explained Bartmann. “The good news is, some men prefer more where some prefer less. Many men just like it when women feel good about themselves in spite of their “defects.”
Bill Bartmann said men worry most about being tall and strong. “The worst “defect” for a man to have is to be short or small boned. Men believe the myth of the “tall, dark and handsome” or the “knight in shining armor.” A man’s self esteem will be very low if he thinks hi is too short or too thin. There is good news for men too; not all women like the big, buff, musclemen. Some women prefer a shorter man who has a strong personality or one who expresses self-confidence and of course, sensitivity.”
Bill Bartmann believes body image is especially important for adolescents as they are constantly comparing themselves to their TV, music or magazine idols. Bill said, “In extreme cases, teens are in danger of developing behavior problems, eating disorders, social problems and severe depression.”
When asked why body image is so important, Bill Bartmann said, “One’s body image represents half of their self-image; the other half is represented by how ones feels about who they are; their beliefs.”
Bill Bartmann concluded this segment of the interview by offering tips for improving one’s body image, including focusing on your good points, maintaining good eating habits, exercising regularly, avoiding unhealthy habits like smoking and drinking and practicing good posture. Bill said, “Walking is good; choose parking spaces that are further away when you go shopping or run errands, take the stairs instead of the elevator. Stand straight and put on the appearance of being happy and confident; projecting the right image is important in the business world.”
