Jan. 20, 2009 - PRLog -- Easton, Maryland  --- To celebrate Black History Month in February, Eastern Shore Vacation Rentals (ESVR) is offering a unique self-guided driving and walking tour of Talbot, Dorchester and Caroline Counties that highlights the history of the abolitionist movement and two of its heroes, Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman.  Guests who book this package will receive 30% off their stay in any of its 60+ properties.
With the Chesapeake Bay, its marshes, woods and pristine farms still in tact, it isn’t hard to image life in the 1850s. Guests who stay at ESVR’s properties will be given a rare opportunity to immerse themselves in America’s rich history.
Some background:
Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in Talbot County and was jailed Easton.  Years later he returned as an author, lecturer and U.S. ambassador to give an important speech about education on the steps of the Talbot County Courthouse.  Both buildings remain virtually untouched since Douglass’s time, and visitors can also see his birthplace and a plantation where Douglass was raised.
Harriet Tubman, a leader and guide in the Underground Railroad, was born on a plantation not far from Douglass in Dorchester County.  After securing her own freedom, Tubman established one of the most successful routes to freedom for southern slaves.  She was also the first woman to lead an armed expedition for the Union Army during the Civil War.  In addition to the Tubman Museum and Education Center, visitors can take a 105-mile driving tour guiding them through key sites in Tubman’s life and in the creation of the Underground Railroad.
ESVR has assembled a list of vacation properties that are ideally located along the route of this historic tour to maximize the experience.  A sample:

* Easton's Promise, which features five ensuite bedrooms in an 1890s house, is located in downtown Easton, two blocks from the historic courthouse and jail where Douglass made history.

* Pier Street, a three-bedroom house with a private dock, faces an important waterway used to ferry slaves to freedom during the Underground Railroad.

*Sunset Bay is a five-bedroom historic waterfront home with a wood-burning fireplace and a children’s dock in Dorchester County along the Underground Railroad Trail.

* A seven-bedroom estate called Captains Quarters features an outdoor fireplace and dock along the Little Choptank River and is close to several homes critical to Tubman’s success in moving slaves to freedom.
