Executive-Functioning Deficits More Common Than You Think

Our newest press release, which discusses the need for independent living supports for those with executive-functioning deficits, is now available online.

Jan. 11, 2009 - PRLog -- At a very conservative estimate, executive-functioning deficits affect one out of every six families here in the Reno/Sparks area. Medical conditions such as Alzheimer’s Disease, autism spectrum disorders, and major depression are often characterized by a reduced capacity to plan, organize, or execute even routine tasks. This isn’t simply a lack of motivation or life-skills training; it is a genuine deficit in cognitive processing that can deeply affect both individuals and their families.

Many of those afflicted by executive-functioning deficits are still capable of living independently when provided with the proper supports. In addition, simply providing some respite for other members of the family can free up time and energy better spent on other support tasks. However, when those whose executive functions are impaired are perceived as otherwise high-functioning individuals, they often do not qualify through existing programs for the supportive services they genuinely need.

Independent Living, LLC has developed a unique service that targets the organizational tasks that most frequently fall through the cracks. These independent-living tasks include keeping on top of routine chores like laundry and dishes, making sure there are always basic food items in the house, and paying bills. These services are provided directly to the individuals in need, or to families where some extra help with routine tasks may free them up to focus on support roles.
