By: Axiell (formerly DS) The London Borough of Hackney serves a population of 209,000 and is one of the host boroughs for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. By moving to the OpenGalaxy LMS provided by Axiell, and joining the LLC, Hackney Libraries now have access to a London-wide catalogue of over 3 million books, CD’s, DVD’s and other items. This improves the service available to library users and, because cataloguing records are shared, reduces the administrative overhead for the cataloguing and acquisitions process. The implementation of the Windows-based OpenGalaxy system was completed in a matter of months, with all services available to the public, including the new Viewpoint public web interface, only 5 days after the previous library management system was switched off. The project was a complex one including a catalogue review, borrower and live circulation data migration and a major catalogue data enhancement project. Edward Rogers, Head of Libraries, Archives and Information for Hackney Council, said: “We are delighted we can now provide our users with access to a vast catalogue of items as members of the London Libraries Consortium. The advice we received as part of the system switch over ensured a smooth implementation process that was completed in under a week.” The migration project also required Hackney to prepare for joining the LLC consortium where members keep their local lending rules and policies. LLC membership allows any borrower to see what’s available anywhere in the system, and to use their ticket to request and reserve any item, no matter where it is located. Following Hackney’s move to join the LLC, London Borough of Ealing has also become a member of the consortium bringing the number of members to 12 and strengthening the consortium membership in the West London area. - ends - Notes to Editors Axiell is a member of Axiell Library Group AB.
