Dec. 18, 2008 - PRLog -- Everybody loves a trip to the zoo! It’s perfect for the whole family—any age, boy or girl. The animals never cease to entertain, and there aren’t any TVs or video games to distract your youngsters. So why not take advantage of these national treasures and celebrate Visit the Zoo Day on December 27 as a family?
The first zoo dates back to 1500 BC in ancient Egypt! The tradition was passed down, all the way to the 1400s AD, when Columbus discovered “The New World.” A new world meant new creatures, and his discoveries renewed interest in zoos all across Europe. Today, there are over 2,800 zoos in the world, and over 6 million people visit them each year!  So what if it’s too cold to go out to the zoo? Well, why not stay in with a good book about the zoo?
‘Twas the Day Before Zoo Day (Sylvan Dell Publishing, 2008) is a delightful adaptation of ’Twas the Night Before Christmas, written by Catherine Ipcizade and illustrated by Ben Hodson. It is a hilarious story that shares zookeeper and animal preparations for the upcoming “Zoo Day.” But things aren’t going according to plan. The llamas won’t quit spitting, the giraffes are drooling, and the zebras aren’t happy at all with their stripes. Meanwhile, the zookeepers are scurrying this way and that, cleaning up poop, ringing mealtime bells, and trying to get the animals bathed. Will “Zoo Day” go off without a hitch? You will have to read the book and find out.
In the fall of 2009, Sylvan Dell Publishing will release What’s New at the Zoo? An Animal Adding Adventure. Go on an animal adventure and find out what’s new at the zoo? Author Suzanne Slade takes readers along on a wild ride as she introduces mother, father, and baby zoo creatures while practicing math along the way! Do you know what pandas feed their cubs? Or what penguins and their chicks do for fun? The imaginative illustrations of Joan Waites bring the zoo right into your own backyard as you join monkeys swinging in the trees and brown bears as they snuggle and cuddle. A peacock, giraffes, even fruit bats—how many animals will you find at the zoo?
