CHANUKAH IN THE CITY 2008 is presented by the Jewish Community Council of Victoria and is supported by the City of Melbourne. Based on a similar event held in New York City, this multi-denominational celebration is the only event of its type in Australia.

Chanukah, otherwise known as the Festival of Lights, commemorates the miracle that occurred when a Menorah, or Synagogue candelabra, remained lit for eight days when there was only enough oil to keep it alight for one.

CHANUKAH IN THE CITY 2008 will be held at Federation Square on Monday 22 December and features thrilling rides and activities for kids, Israeli dancing and a huge line-up of live and local Melbourne talent. Celebrations commence at 5:00pm and continue throughout the afternoon into the evening. Hosted by Anton Berezin, one of the stars of smash-hit musical Wicked, guests this year include popular international children’s acts BOB THE BUILDER and ANGELINA BALLERINA.

The afternoon entertainment schedule also features some of the Melbourne Jewish community’s finest artists including KLEZMERITIS and a range of performing community groups. The afternoon and evening features live performances from THE MELBOURNE JEWISH MALE VOICE CHOIR and the CHANUKAH ALL STARR BAND, featuring one of Australia’s most-renowned musical theatre performers - Troy Sussman.

Special guests at this year’s celebrations are two of Melbourne’s finest jazz families, THE
SEDERGREENS and THE STARR BROTHERS. These amazing musicians have been part of Melbourne’s music scene for over 20 years and 2008 will mark the first time these extraordinary talents have performed together at CHANUKAH IN THE CITY.

The official proceedings and lighting of the Chanukiah will begin at 8:40pm with an address from Melbourne’s new Lord Mayor Robert Doyle, and the evening will culminate with the lighting of the largest gas-burning Chanukiah (candelabra) in the Southern Hemisphere.

After last year’s record crowd we are gearing up for the biggest CHANUKAH IN THE CITY ever. Full of local Melbourne talent and fun activities for the kids, this celebratory event is the perfect way to kick off the holiday season in the heart of the City of Melbourne.
