Golf ball sized hail caused record breaking damage to crops, broke windows out of houses & cars, and beat up motorcycles, farming equipment and buildings – with one road, the 112, even requiring a snow plow to clear all the hail.
“Most of the damage occurred in the North end of the Valley out by La Garita and along Highway 112.” said Chris Eddy, Farm, Ranch & Crop department manager at Dell’s Insurance in Alamosa.
Chris added “We’ve had well over 200 claims on Monday, which is the most I’ve seen in one day in a very long time, and they’re still coming in. Most of the initial reports are at 50% - 100% crop loss, but we already have insurance adjusters out in the fields gathering accurate loss information.”
Crop Hail Insurance is specifically designed to help protect a farmer from just this kind of disaster. Without insurance protection in place, a farmer could easily be wiped out by this kind of hailstorm.
