The brand kicked things off in 1998 by outfitting the “Cobras,” a 12-year-old boys’ team in Renton, WA. The Cobras are all young adults these days, and Code Four Athletics has grown up too: It now offers its exclusive collection of soccer uniforms, warm-ups and gear directly to teams and clubs throughout Washington and across the United States.

Since the beginning, the company has worked to differentiate itself from other brands in the soccer marketplace. Most notably, you won’t find a Code Four logo on its uniforms or warm-ups. “Not having an identifying mark on the outside of our apparel has always been a key part of our approach,” said Mike Carter, Code Four Athletics Marketing Director. “We’ve always felt the most important logo on our soccer jersey should be that of the team wearing it, not a Code Four logo.”

Most other brands also sell strictly through retailers, who then contract out with a local screen-printer for individual team logos and player numbers. Code Four, on the other hand, sells its brand directly to the public from its office/warehouse in Renton, WA, where it stocks its entire inventory and does its own in-house screen-printing and embroidery for teams.

Still, being different isn’t always enough—especially when it comes to attracting customers from outside Puget Sound. A customer in New Jersey, for instance, may see a uniform on the company’s website at http://www.codefourathletics.com but feel more comfortable buying another product from a local soccer shop where they can see the uniform in person.

“We certainly understand customers want to see the quality of what they’re getting before they spend their money,” said Carter, which is why the company promotes a ‘See Before You Buy’ policy of loaning out merchandise samples at no charge to potential team customers throughout the continental United States. Statistics indicate more than two-thirds of people who request samples ultimately buy from the company.

Also helping drive the brand’s success is the Code Four company car: a Volkswagen Beetle customized with a soccer-ball pattern. It can routinely be seen around town, or at a local summer soccer tournament where Code Four has set up a booth for the day. “The best part of driving ‘The Bug’ is seeing people smile when it goes by,” remarked Carter, seemingly smiling himself as he reflects back on 10 years. “We’ve been very fortunate to play a small part in helping kids of all ages enjoy the sport of soccer,” he said. “I can’t wait to see what the next 10 years holds in store.”
