These new green building techniques will be very beneficial to reducing the negative impacts that traditional paving techniques may have on our environment,” Benefits of permeable pavement and stormwater management systems include controlling stormwater with the least effect to local streams, filtering surface water naturally through topsoil, replenishing groundwater stores with filtered surface water, adding green space, improving air quality, and reducing the “heat island effect” which increases temperatures where asphalt is in abundance. The recently passed NC regulations require that all vehicle parking areas, except covered or multi-level parking areas, should include a built-upon area not exceeding 80% of the total area and permeable pavement or stormwater management system constituting the remaining 20% of the total area. Stormwater management systems include, but are not limited to, grass and other pervious surfaces and bioretention ponds, cisterns, and other water retention devices.
