The film was written and directed by Eli Steele who is deaf and wears the cochlear implant. Many incidents from his life inspired the film, including the comic sex scene- an audience favorite.
Ross Thomas received critical acclaim for his portrayal of Seth Singer. He worked very closely with director Eli Steele on the deaf dialect and mannerisms. In-Forum praised him for his “closely observed performance.”
Amy Purdy, a below the knee double amputee, was also praised for her impressive acting debut in the role of Alma. Losing her legs to bacterial meningitis, Amy was able to draw on her own personal experiences to bring depth and humor to her role.
