When Cynthia Bistrain decided to get rid of all the plastic that touches her food, after reading about how plasticizers potentially leach hazardous chemicals unto food and drink, she discovered the project to be a difficult one. The reason behind getting rid of plastic is that plasticizers, which make plastics malleable, can act like hormones in our body which leads to disease. Cynthia and her husband, John Wrenn launched http://www.HealthyKitchenware.com to provide resources and education about toxins leached by plastics unto food and drink.
When Cynthia was diagnosed with endometriosis in 2005, she had never heard of the word. The Endometriosis Association (http://www.endometriosisassn.org) affirms that “Endometriosis is a serious disease associated with pain, immune dysfunction, infertility, cancer, and autoimmune diseases that can be managed only through active, informed decision making.” While reading about endometriosis, Cynthia realized there is no one reason as to how she developed this disease and no real cure.
John Wrenn, HealthyKitchenware.com co-founder, was startled to discover that man-made chemicals called xenoestrogens, which mimic estrogen in the human body and contribute to hormone imbalance, are found in plastics, detergents and antibiotics among other common consumer products. These substances have been in our environment for less than 70 years, so their effects are only now being studied. Their family is successfully managing the disease after seeking treatment and making lifestyle changes.
Amongst other things, they changed all their refrigerator containers to glass and all their plastic coated pots and pans to stainless steel or enameled cast iron products. Through HealthyKitchenware.com, John and Cynthia hope to help others suffering from the effects of plasticizers. In addition to offering glass and stainless steel products for the kitchen, baby and lunchbox, the site features advice and information on reducing toxins to create a healthier lifestyle.
