In the past plus size women were given limited options when it came to dressing like their thinner peers. But thanks to national body image campaigns like the popular Dove Girls and the emergence of plus size celebrities like Nikki Blonsky of Hairspray, Mo’Nique, and American Idol winner, Jordin Sparks, plus size women are embracing their curves. Their new confidence has created a demand for trendy plus size clothes that has women’s plus size apparel sales soaring to over 76B this year, up from 60B last year.
These numbers have motivated the fashion community to bring plus size women the same styles that their slender sisters wear. Designers like Calvin Klein, Carmen Marc Valvo, and Michael Kors have all introduced plus size lines. In addition, plus size specialty designers like Anna Scholz, Abby Z, and Jessica Svoboda have seen a significant increase in their sales as well as exposure in national fashion magazines. Recently Vogue magazine featured Svoboda jeans, the top selling premium plus size designer jeans that have taken the plus size clothing industry by storm. Being featured in Vogue demonstrates that the most powerful fashion magazine is taking plus size fashion seriously. Glamour magazine also routinely features plus size fashions from Abby Z, Svoboda, and other designers who provide stylish and trendy plus size clothing.
