Investintech.com Announces Launch Of $1,000 Annual Scholarship For Journalism Students

TORONTO - Nov. 11, 2019 - PRLog -- Investintech.com, developers of Able2Extract Professional, proudly announces its first annual Investintech-CAJ Data Journalism Scholarship.

Investintech.com aims to help journalism students pay for their education with a one-time prize of $1,000 CAD. The winner also gets a free one year CAJ membership and a free pass to the annual national CAJ conference. The prize will go to one Canadian student who shows insight and understanding of the journalism industry.

To ensure submissions are reviewed along journalistic guidelines, Investintech has partnered with the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) (https://caj.ca/index.php), a professional organization with more than 700 members across Canada. The CAJ's primary roles are public-interest advocacy work and professional development for its members.

Eligibility: Students who are:

• Majoring in a journalism program, working towards a Bachelor's or Master's degree
• Currently accepted to or enrolled in a Canadian college or university
• Pursuing a course of studies leading to an undergraduate or graduate degree in journalism

Application Details: Submissions must include:

• An example of a work of journalism that shows the application of data skills (e.g. use of spreadsheets, web scraping, mapping tools)
• An explanation of what you did and how you did it, including the resources used
• An idea for a project you'd like to work on if you had more data journalism skills
• A letter of support from an instructor or editor

Other rules:
  • Submissions may be a published item, class assignment or an item on a personal blog
  • Work must have been produced within one year of the scholarship closing date
  • Individual work is preferred (if submitted item is produced as part of a team of two or more, applicant must have done the bulk of the work)
  • Previous winners are excluded; one submission per student

Selection Process: Guidelines for reviewing submissions:

• Follow all requirements; complete all details
• Entries must be in English or French
• Minimum word count for written parts: 500
• Creativity, style, coherence, readability
• Effective use of data, visualizations and medium used
• Major sources linked to back claims; strength of the topic and the work

Selection Committee: Investintech will collaborate with the CAJ to create a jury of judges with experience and writing credentials at authoritative publications. It will include one Investintech representative and one CAJ member to provide their input.

  • Announcement: April 16, 2020
  • Award date for 2019-2020: April 17, 2020
