Near-Death Experiences Part of Speaker Series - The Light at the End of the Tunnel

Jan. 26, 2016 - PRLog -- Near-death experiences are part of a new series of talks by author James Hilgendorf.

Near-death experience research by such well-known researchers as Elisabeth Kubler-Ross and Dr. Kenneth Ring has uncovered a common pattern of events that people often encounter when going through the near-death experience.  Elisabeth Kubler-Ross writes:

“After they leave, they go toward a light, through a tunnel, over a bridge or river.  After they have passed over, then comes what a Christian would call ‘hell’.  There is no god who condemns you, but you are forced to review your own life.

“It’s like watching a television screen and your whole life is passed in front of you.  You see everything you have ever done and thought.  So it is not a god who condemns you, but you condemn yourself.”

What is this light that that seems to emanate great compassion that people often encounter during the near-death experience?  Some think it is a religious figure, like Christ or Buddha.  But research has shown that this experience has nothing to do with the religion a person holds or does not hold.

The essence of this encounter, and of the near-death experience in general, is explored in the author's talks, which also include commentary from such famous figures as Arnold Toynbee, Albert Einstein, Leo Tolstoy, Henri Bergson, Joseph Campbell, and others, and cover a wide range of topics from classical physics to quantum theory and the real meaning of happiness.

The author has given talks most recently at the Unitarian Universalist groups in both Santa Rosa and Berkeley, the Humanist Association for the Greater Sacramento Area, and the Humanist Community in San Jose.

One of his books is “Life & Death: A Buddhist Perspective.” Of the book, a few reviewers wrote:

"If I were to teach a basic college-level course in religion, philosophy, or metaphysics - call it Spirituality 101 - this book would be required reading.  In fact, it would be the first week's assignment.  Having read all or parts of nearly a thousand books dealing with spiritual matters, I cannot recall another that so simply and effectively blends the fundamentals of religion and science." - Michael E. Tymn, Journal of Religion and Psychical Research.

"A must-read!  I am serious when I say that reading James Hilgendorf's 'Life & Death: A Buddhist Perspective' was a life-changing experience.  It has changed the way I will live the rest of my life." - Lisbeth Gant-Britton, author of "African American History” and UCLA adjunct professor in African-American Studies.

This is a comment from his latest Berkeley UU talk:

“James presentation was full of interesting information and ideas. He presented ideas from great thinkers of the past, as well as more modern ideas on how our society has come to be where it is now, where it could be headed and what we need to do to get there. His knowledge about the world’s religions and his Buddhist background made for a thought-provoking presentation and generated a number of very interesting questions and comments from our audience.”
– Barbara Rockhold, Chair of Personal Theology Speaker Series at Unitarian Universalist Church of Berkeley

James Hilgendorf has been practicing Buddhism for forty-three years with the Soka Gakkai International, the largest Buddhist lay organization in the world now, with 12,000,000 members in 192 countries and territories around the globe.
