Simless Unveils World's First GSM Phone Without a SIM Card Slot

Startup demonstrates “SIM-less” smartphone capable of downloading multiple virtual SIM cards over-the-air

BARCELONA, Spain - March 2, 2015 - PRLog -- Simless, Inc., an Atlanta, Georgia-based telecommunications technology startup, founded by former AT&T and Deutsche Telekom employees, announced today that it has built the first GSM smartphone that does not require a plastic SIM card, but instead is capable of downloading virtual SIM cards over-the-air via a secure WiFi or dedicated cellular connection. The first generation smartphone, codenamed WK100, runs on the latest version of the Android operating system and features an impressive 6.4” display. The phone could be sold in specific geographic markets for less than 150 US dollars by the end of the year. What makes the device groundbreaking is its highly - integrated mobile application that allows consumers to purchase, download and manage multiple virtual SIM cards. This is especially useful in travel, enterprise, Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) and other scenarios where managing multiple physical SIM cards is challenging.

The Simless Platform is the Next Generation Marketplace for Mobile Connectivity

Simless has also developed a cloud-based platform including a digital store that enables the users of connected devices to discover pre-paid and post-paid cellular connectivity plans, compare plan features, purchase plans and download the corresponding SIM card. For mobile network operators, the Simless Platform includes a personalization server that simplifies the procurement of SIM cards. The platform allows operators to securely and conveniently create digital SIM cards from an easy-to-use dashboard, upload associated service plan details and receive real-time analytics of their digital SIM campaigns.

Simless Technology will catalyze the growth of M2M and the Internet of Things

The company's technology approach can be easily extended to all kinds of connected devices, especially those associated with the Internet of Things (IoT). To enable connectivity in an even greater number of connected objects, Simless is leveraging its patent-pending technology to create the Simless System-on-Chip (S2oC). The S2oC is the next step in the evolution of the traditional system-on-chip, integrating reprogrammable cellular connectivity to effectively eliminate the space required for today’s SIM card slots in printed circuit boards, while maintaining a commensurate level of security and performance. This will enable original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to integrate cellular connectivity into a wider variety of devices at a lower cost.

Upcoming Pilot Programs in 2015

Following Mobile World Congress, Simless will conduct pilot programs in various geographic markets around the world, beginning in Hong Kong.  Simless is proud to be working with China Motion Mobile (CMM) for the Hong Kong pilot. “We are excited to take part in a cutting-edge technology pilot with Simless,” said Ryan Alvarez, Vice President of Marketing for CMM. “Their technology will reach a significant number of subscribers we otherwise wouldn’t, and at a significantly lower acquisition cost.”

Throughout 2015, Simless will announce additional Operator and OEM partners as it prepares for a large-scale commercial launch.
