The panel is a joint project of the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) and the Lumina Foundation (http://www.luminafoundation.org/
According to CIC president Richard Ekman, the Lumina Foundation asked CIC to launch a process for appraising the many claims to fresh approaches in higher education, including new business models and deliberately disruptive innovations. With Lumina's support, CIC seeks to engage many of its 625 institutional members in an effort to give fresh consideration to institutional missions, long-term strategic plans, and newer business models that retain the student-centered nature of independent colleges but vary in their calculations of revenue and expenses.
“In light of the enduring qualities that are regarded as essential to the success of independent institutions, Lumina Foundation is working to increase the proportion of Americans with high-quality degrees, certificates and other credentials to 60 percent by 2025,” Dr. Calingo said. “Both Lumina and the CIC want to create a framework that independent colleges can use as they evaluate their missions and strategic plans for the future -- something akin to an environmental scan. I’m honored to be invited to join this initiative and I’m eager to delve into the issues before the Committee.”
Foremost among those issues are these:
o Which elements of the traditional liberal arts model of education are essential to sustain, and which are ripe for reconsideration?
o Which of the major emerging innovations are worth adoption by smaller private colleges?
o How can major external factors that shape CIC members’ ability to operate -- such as the demographic shifts in the U.S. -- be seen as opportunities?
Among those named to the Steering Committee are Chris Kimball, President, California Lutheran University; Mary B. Marcy, President, Dominican University of California; Todd S. Hutton, President, Utica College; Elizabeth J. Stroble, President, Webster University; John S. Wilson, President, Morehouse College, and 17 others.
An international expert in strategic planning and quality management, Dr. Calingo has assisted the governments of Indonesia, Mongolia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam on the establishment and implementation of their national awards for quality and business excellence, as well as the infusion of quality assurance into their higher education systems. He has served as a member of the Board of Examiners of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the country’s highest award for quality and performance excellence, since 1997. Dr. Calingo’s professional interests include servant leadership, strategic planning, total quality management and international business with a focus on Southeast Asia.
Calingo was installed as Woodbury’s 13th president in October 2012 after serving in leadership roles at Dominican University of California; the Boler School of Business at John Carroll University, the Jesuit School of Cleveland; and the College of Business Administration at California State University, Long Beach, among others. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh, an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh, a Master of Urban and Regional Planning from the University of the Philippines, and a B.S. in industrial engineering from the University of the Philippines.
