Vintage images, culled from various private collections and the United States Air Force archives, illustrate the scenes of Beale Air Force Base on high alert during the Cold War. Camp Beale, the largest cantonment built in the western United States during World War II, is shown in its many stages of development. Chapters in the book discuss the building of the flight line, Titan I Missile sites, the KC-135 Stratotanker, B-52 Stratofortress, the Vitenam War, U-2 Dragon Lady, Desert Storm and many other specific events in the base’s history. Beale Air Force Base During The Cold War hopes to preserve the important history of the base for future generations of military personal and civilians. As author James B. Quest noted, “This is about a time in the history of Beale Air Force Base that is not well-known to many of the airmen serving at the base today. No other era dominated the base’s history more than the four decades in which units of the Strategic Air Command’s nuclear and reconnaissance forces stood alert during the Cold War.” Available at area bookstores, independent retailers, and online retailers, or through Arcadia Publishing at (888)-313-2665 or online.
