Mental Health Unit chooses Invacare’s Softform Premier Crib 7 mattress

BRIDGEND, Wales - Aug. 30, 2013 - PRLog -- Mattresses going into a hospital/healthcare environment are required to be tested to and pass a minimum of BS 7177: Crib 5. This is the flammability requirement for any mattress going into this market sector, categorised as a ‘Medium Hazard’ environment. Healthcare settings that have a higher risk level such as mental health wards are classed as a ‘High to Very High Hazard’ environment and therefore require mattresses to comply with a more stringent fire test - BS 7177: Crib 7.

Anita Kilroy-Findley, Tissue Viability Nurse AMH/LD/FYPC, recently put together a case to have Invacare’s Softform Premier mattress with Srikethrough Resistant Technology (SRT) Crib 7 put across all her inpatient units in mental health and learning disabilities.

Anita explained as part of her case how the Softform Premier with SRT is available in both Crib 5 and Crib 7 fire ratings. “The higher rating (Crib 7) relates to a slower ignition time and faster dying out time when compared to the industry standard of Crib 5, making it much more suitable for this particular ward environment.” Anita went on to state “the recent fire in a neighbouring area where a mattress was set alight and caused damage had a Crib 5 rating. To ensure this doesn’t happen in these inpatient units, Crib 7 mattresses are required.”

Anita had previously trialled the Softform Premier with SRT and was more than happy with the results. “The Softform Premier with SRT was evaluated in the trust for 8 months to identify whether it was as durable against snags and tears as the competitor mattress, as well as being comfortable to patients and easy to clean and maintain for staff; all 5 trial mattresses successfully passed the evaluation.”
