Harmonized European Standard Methods for Toy Safety

In May 2013, SGS informed you that the new European Standard EN 71-4:2013 will eventually repeal the existing method EN 71-4:2009 when the new version is harmonized under the Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC.

GENEVA - July 1, 2013 - PRLog -- The new version is harmonized under the Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC by publication in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU).

Toy Safety Standards to Ensure Child Safety

On 28 May 2013, Commission Communication 2013C 149/02 was published in the OJEU (1). This publication by the EU commission makes the standard EN 71-4:2013 ‘Experimental sets for chemistry and related activities’ a harmonized standard. This means that compliance with the standard gives presumption of compliance with the toy directive. It is the first chemical standard to be harmonized under Directive 2009/48/EC. Normally, EU toy standards are published twice:

- By the standards organization CEN which makes it an agreed and accepted standard. In the SafeGuards 83/13 (2) bulletin, SGS informed on the publication by CEN and the changes to the standard.
- By the EU commission in the OJEU by legally accepting the standard under the toy safety Directive 2009/48/EC.

Highlights of the harmonized standards under the Union harmonization legislation are summarized in Table 1(http://newsletter.sgs.com/eNewsletterPro/uploadedimages/0... the latest SGS SafeGuards bulletin.
