DPGITM Engineering College organised Workshop on women’s right and safety issue

April 20, 2013 - PRLog -- Gurgaon, April 2013- Increase in the rate of crimes against women is the most delicate subject in the country. Understanding the sensitiveness of this issue, DPGITM Engineering College took an initiative of awaking women for their Rights, by organising one day workshop on ‘Sensitization Program on Rights of Women’ in association with “Justice for All”. Mrs. Narinder Kaur- Chief Judicial Magistrate and Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, inaugurated the event. Along with Chairman of the college- Rajender Gahlot, Vice Chairman- Deepak Gahlot and Principal- J.S Mahanwal were also graced the occasion.

Chairman- Rajender Gahlot said while addressing the gathering, “We all need to understand that an ambition of developed and advanced India cannot be achieved without resolving the serious issue of ‘Women and their Security’. Lack of awareness about their rights and social phobia among women are also the reasons for increasing atrocities and crimes against them. This workshop seeks to inform women of their rights.”

Chief Guest- Narinder Kaur appreciated the event and said, “The Constitution of India also believes in gender equivalence and it can easily be shown in its Preamble, Fundamental Rights, Fundamental Duties and Directive Principles. It not only grants equality to women, but also permits the state to adopt measures of positive discrimination in favour of women for deactivating the effect of increasing socio economic, educational and political injustice faced by them.”

The workshop was very interactive and many sensitive issues like Women’s Position in Law: What needs to Change, Sexual Harassment at work place, Domestic Violence, Crimes against Women, Property Rights of women and many more. A mention on the current women safety scenario especially in and around Delhi NCR was inevitable. Along with Students and faculty members, speakers from ITM University like Prof. S. Shanthakumar, Ms. Babita Sharma, Ms. Nancy Dabas, Ms. Gabriella, Ms. Garishma and Ms. Sunethra, actively presented and share their views. Everybody agreed and emphasised on modification and revision of laws to make them strict. Students got information about Provisions in Constitution for crimes against women. Some of the crimes are Rape (Sec. 376 IPC), Kidnapping & Abduction for different purposes ( Sec. 363-373), Homicide for Dowry, Dowry Deaths or their attempts (Sec. 302/304-B IPC), Torture, both mental and physical (Sec. 498-A IPC),Molestation (Sec. 354 IPC), Sexual Harassment (Sec. 509 IPC) and Importation of girls (up to 21 years of age).
