The Role Of Sanitation In Girl Education- A Documentary Film By Heeals

Feb. 6, 2013 - PRLog -- India is the open defecation capital of the world, where people  have more mobile phones then toilets, having easy access to banks as compared to toilets . Open defecation is a big concern and a big issue to be addressed which still is not that touched upon  subject among the community. As people here do not wants to talk about this issue. People in many part of the villages and urban slums here make there homes , schools without the toilets or with out girl toilets as they don’t see any use of it even if they have money to build it , instead of this they go out and defecate in the open , without knowing the ill effects and consequences of it on their health, society and environment.

With the main objective of creating awareness among the community about the importance of education, open defecation and clean water, HEEALS, a non-profit organization, has collaborated with  students from the Central School of Speech and Drama (CSSD), University Of London, to use Applied Theatre as an unconventional and proactive tool to increase awareness among school children in villages and urban slums in Gurgaon and the Delhi NCR region. The HEEALS Team along with CSSD students, ,managed to successfully implement the effectiveness of using dramatization to communicate important messages across in a fun, imaginative and expressive way to develop the students’ understandings on the subject matter. The potency of applied theatre was reflected in that its method was inclusive and its purpose went beyond language barriers.

Country where approx 44 % girl students dropout from the schools due to non availability of toilets and lack of menstrual hygiene ,HEEALS with students of RCSSD College University of London  made a documentary film by the title " The Role of Sanitation in Girl Child Education", the documentary is trying to relate as how Girl Child education is directly suffering due to bad sanitation facilities , unsafe drinking water and lack of knowledge to obtain the same. Film is trying to relate the untouched areas of Girl dropout rate , the factors and reasons behind the increase in dropout of girls due to non availability of toilets and bad sanitation facilities in Girl Schools. The film is also showcasing serious issues such as sexual harassment and eve teasing that happens due to non availability of toilet facilities in schools.

The documentary film has been projected as a medium for creating awareness among the masses about the cause and issues , and appeals all the people from corporate, philanthropist and government to come forward and help in creating awareness and providing the toilets facilities and good sanitation & water facilities in  schools of urban slums and rural areas.
