Man Who Lost His Home Has Bitter Sweet Ending - With Healthcare Cutbacks it Could Be Any Of Us!

With deep cutbacks to healthcare for seniors, this could happen to any one of us. We have seen elderly people get lost or confused but never one to move all the contents of the home to a non existent location over an hour away by hiring movers.

Man Who Could Not Find Home in Harrison Has a Bitter Sweet Ending

Harrison Hot Springs, BC – On October 01, 2011 a team from Kary Movers Ltd in Surrey were sent to what seemed like a routine move for a gentleman in Burnaby. They had planned on picking up the contents of the gentleman’s apartment and relocating him to Harrison Hot Springs.

Upon the teams arrival they were informed by the client that his car had been stolen and that the actual address, contact name and phone number for his new residence had been in the vehicle when it was stolen. He did state that he had driven the car to Harrison three times to deliver boxes of personal items so when he did arrive in Harrison in a cab ahead of the movers, he would be able to direct them to the unload location.

Unfortunately he was unable to identify the home were the suite was located which started a three hour search around Harrison Hot Springs for the house. The moving team allowed him to get in the truck to allow the cab to leave and save him money. He was convincing in his conviction that he would be able to identify the house and did have a description of the home and that there was a couple with a sixteen year old son living upstairs from his suite. After three hours it was suggested that he get a motel for the night and try to speak with locals in hopes of someone knowing of the house or people living there. He was taken to the Glencoe Motel and Campgrounds where the management were so welcoming to him and assisted in not only proving a discounted room for him but also took home driving around town the following morning in search for the residence. They were just amazing. Meanwhile they kept in touch with the staff at Kary Movers who were also sending out countless emails and faxes in an attempt to find the location.

Once it became clear that he was not able to locate the house and some red flags were starting to show, the local RCMP were asked to assist and they also went on a search for the house. People all over Harrison Hot Springs were now getting involved to help. As a small community, the people there stepped up without question to show how much they care and wanted to help a total stranger.

As the search continued, social services were also brought in and through efforts of everyone, it was learned that although he was convincing and presented well, there were other issues that may have led to this elderly man being in Harrison hot Springs. His nephew was tracked down in Kelowna and was very concerned about his uncle upon hearing the story as to what was happening. It was confirmed with the nephew that his uncle had not had a car for about 15 years and did suffer from some health issues.

The bitter part of the ending is that it seems he does have some health issues and he seems to have been missed by heath care and social services in getting him more help and support. The sweet part of the story is that an entire community got involved to help a total stranger and it is now everyone’s hope that he will get the care and support that seems to have missed him previously.

In the meantime, Langley based Kary Movers Ltd will store all of his belongings in their secure warehouse facility at no charge until such time as he gets a new residence and will do everything they can as a family run business to help this client.

It is the first time that anyone in the Kary Movers team has ever run into such a situation and they just want to thank ALL of the people of Harrison Hot Springs for getting so involved and caring so much for this gentleman. If there was more of this sense of community and caring in all of our cities and towns, our province would have almost no crime and people would be so much better off. Harrison Hot Springs is a leader in showing what can happen when a community cares.

We will post updates on our Twitter and Facebook pages if anyone wishes to follow how this progresses.
