Urban Solar Awarded Orange County Solar Lighting Contract

July 24, 2012 - PRLog -- Urban Solar Corporation, a leading manufacturer of solar powered LED lighting solutions, is pleased to announce that Orange County Transportation Authority of Orange County, California, has placed an order with Urban Solar to supply solar powered lighting systems for their bus stops.  Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) selected Urban Solar’s PV-Signal for their bus stops.  The PV-Signal is a solar powered LED lighting and bus signaling system which incorporates high intensity LED lighting.  Each PV-Signal delivers a safe waiting environment for riders, integrated low-profile, bus signaling capabilities and vandal-resistant attributes.  

OCTA solicited proposals to secure solar lighting and bus signaling for bus stops to enhance passenger safety while integrating a sustainable environmentally friendly bus stop lighting solution.  OCTA currently operates over thirteen hundred solar powered LED bus stops.  Each solar bus stop contains a bus signal device which was a must-have feature for OCTA.

In 2003, a system wide bus stop survey was completed to identify potential safety issues and develop an ongoing plan to upgrade the approximately 6,250 bus stops.  The result is the Bus Stop Safety Program.  In 2011 OCTA received a Federal Transit Administration discretionary grant.  The grant allows the agency to complete its Bus Stop Safety Program by installing additional solar lights at preselected bus stops throughout Orange County to improve the safety, security, and accessibility of the system.  The incorporation of Urban Solar lighting at bus stops demonstrates the on-going efforts of OCTA commitment to the environment.  “This contract award is another strong statement in support of Urban Solar’s bus stop solar lighting systems,” states Jeff Peters, Urban Solar’s President.  “Like many other California transit agencies, OCTA is leading the way for solar bus stop lighting and environmentally friendly practices in the transit industry.  OCTA’s experience with solar lighting at bus stops, coupled with this contract, are strong statements in OCTA’s on-going commitment in delivering safer stops for their riders.”  

Urban Solar successfully responded to a RFP from OCTA released in May 2012.  Combining bright white LED technology with Urban Solar’s Energy Control Module, coupled with bus signaling capabilities, the PV-Signal provides a comfortable waiting environment for bus riders awaiting their bus and ensures riders will be seen by bus drivers and other motorists. “The result,” states Peters, “is a safer, more welcoming bus stop that helps enhance the transit experience while also reducing OCTA’ carbon footprint.”
