Jewel in the Crown of Sustainable Aquaculture

Geoff Matthews, CEO of Mt. Cook Alpine Salmon Ltd says what really stuns international visitors to the salmon farm, is the fact you can drink the water downstream of the farm.

June 18, 2012 - PRLog -- Jeff Sedacca, President Shrimp/Aquaculture division of National Fish and Seafood, says Mt. Cook Alpine Salmonʼs farming operations in the Southern Alps of New Zealand is the finest aquaculture site in the world.
“Iʼve been involved with aquaculture now for 35 years and visited a large number of farm sites around the world, and I have to say, nothing compares with Mt. Cook Alpine Salmonʼs farming conditions,” says Jeff Sedacca.
Jeff Sedacca was commenting after recently visiting the Mackenzie Basin to view the Mt. Cook Farming operations first hand.
Mt. Cook Alpine Salmon farms in man-made hydro canals that run between high alpine lakes, and make secondary use of water after it has been used to generate hydro electricity.
“The great thing is that they are combining the strategic advantage of their environment with excellent farming practices to produce the finest salmon in the world, and they are doing it sustainably,” Jeff Sedacca says.
“This whole farming operation is really the jewel in the crown of sustainable aquaculture in the world today. Nothing quite compares,” he says.
National Fish and Seafood is a Pacific Andes company based in Gloucester Massachusetts USA, and is Mt. Cook Alpine Salmonʼs largest international distributor.
Geoff Matthews, CEO of Mt. Cook Alpine Salmon Ltd says what really stuns international visitors to the salmon farm, is the fact you can drink the water downstream of the farm.
“When we tell people in the USA that they can drink the water after itʼs passed through the farm, you can see they want to believe you, but all their instincts say otherwise,” he says.
To prove a point, Matthews says he recently had the water below the farm measured against New Zealand Drinking Water Standards.
“In comprehensive water quality tests conducted by Environment Laboratory Services, a Ministry of Health approved testing laboratory, the water below our farms on both the Tekapo and Ohau Canals passes New Zealand Drinking Water Standards and is safe to drink,” Geoff Matthews says.
Matthews says that being able to drink the water after it passes through the salmon farm is an important part of Mt. Cook Alpine Salmonʼs international marketing strategy.
“It helps consumers in other countries comprehend the purity of the environment we farm in, and it helps support our sustainable farming credentials,” he says.
Matthews says that the full assay of testing results of the 22 compounds that must be satisfied to meet New Zealand Drinking Water Standards will be published on the Mt. Cook
Alpine Salmonʼs web site, alongside the results of regular monitoring of compounds monitored by the farm that are relevant to salmon production.
