The theme of this year's event is "Suicide Prevention across the Globe: Strengthening Protective Factors and Instilling Hope."
IASP has published a World Suicide Prevention Day brochure and a list of suggested activities for individuals and organizations to use in planning their participation in this Day that helps to increase suicide prevention awareness across the globe.
The brochure describes the magnitude of suicide in the world, outlining age, gender and country differences, and groups at risk. The brochure also shares protective factors in suicide prevention and focusses on priorities for suicide prevention across the globe.
The list of suggested activities includes ideas such as:
-Writing articles for national, regional and community newspapers and magazines
-Organizing cultural or spiritual events, fairs or exhibitions
-Organizing walks to political or public places to highlight suicide prevention
-Holding training courses in suicide and depression awareness
-Lighting a candle, near a window, at 8 PM in support of: World Suicide Prevention Day, suicide prevention awareness, survivors of suicide and for the memory of loved lost ones.
The brochure and list of suggested activities can be downloaded from the World Suicide Prevention Day website at: http://www.iasp.info/
the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) was founded in Vienna (1960) as a fellowship of researchers, clinicians, practitioners, volunteers and national and local organizations. IASP, in official relations with the World Health Organization (WHO), believes that suicide prevention should be given greater priority at global, national, and local levels incorporating research that has shown suicide is preventable. IASP co-sponsors World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10th every year with the WHO.
