Bengaluru, 7th December, 2011: Professor John Rosenberg, Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor & Vice-President, La Trobe University, travelled to India to ink MOUs; sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Presidency College, Bengaluru University. In the evening he hosted successful alumni event.
The MOU was signed in presence of Prof. John Rosenberg, Sr. DVC La Trobe University, Australia ; Dr. Muddu Vinay (Principal and Director of Presidency College) and Mr. Nissar Ahmed ( Chairman of Presidency College) Bengaluru University.
The MOU is an Agreement on Articulation of certain programs: By this Presidency College students can study some part of the program at Presidency College, Bengaluru and the remaining part at La Trobe University, Australia. This would entitle the students to get the final degree be awarded by La Trobe University, Australia
Before coming to Bengaluru, Prof Rosenberg inaugurated La Trobe’s South Asia office in Delhi and participated in the celebration of 15th Anniversary of partnership with Lady Shri Ram College (LSR), Delhi.
He was accompanied by leading academics and researchers from La Trobe University.
Professor Rosenberg also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Delhi Technological University (DTU). The MOU will lead to collaborative research, joint student projects, student and staff exchange, study tour, internships, and articulation opportunities. Discussions are in progress for 2+2 joint degree programs in UG area and 1+1 joint degree programs in PG area
He also inaugurated the La Trobe University South Asia office in Delhi. The Delhi office will further strengthen La Trobe’s commitment to South Asia in developing strong partnership with leading universities and companies that can lead to collaborative projects. The office will also assist students.
‘La Trobe University looks forward to welcoming more Indian students and building strong research collaborations with Indian institutions.’ said Professor Rosenberg.
He outlined the Australian Government’s recent strategic review of the student visa program, headed by the Hon Michael Knight AO.  Knight made substantial recommendations for change to the visa regime which has been accepted.  ‘This will definitely encourage genuine students to consider Australia for their higher education. I personally think these are very positive and welcome changes.’
Later Professor Rosenberg and his delegation participated in the celebration of 15th Anniversary of La Trobe’s partnership with Lady Shri Ram College (LSR), Delhi, many of whom spoke highly of La Trobe’s teaching methods...
In the evening he with his team hosted a very well attended Reception for Alumni, students, parents and partners.
On 8 December the delegation headed to Chennai to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with IIT Madras. ‘The IIT – La Trobe collaboration is an extremely important one for us’, said Professor Rosenberg. “This relationship could grow bigger with our other institutional partners, including the prestigious National University of Singapore (NUS), joining for future collaborative projects since NUS is a partner university for both La Trobe and IIT”. Professor Rosenberg also announced a scholarship worth $5,000 for an IIT student to undertake an internship program at La Trobe University. The selected student could use this scholarship for travel and living expenses. The focus of the relationship will be to develop collaborative research projects, joint PhD opportunities and student/staff exchange in areas including computer science, electronic engineering and biotechnology. Discussions are under progress for a joint project opportunity with La Trobe’s Centre for Technology Infusion and IIT.  
Professor John Rosenberg went on to say that “India has had a special relationship with La Trobe University since its inception. At its birth in 1967, La Trobe made a commitment to the study of India and its neighbours. A number of high profile academics were appointed to drive this agenda and the La Trobe Institute for India and South Asia was established”. The tradition continues today through institutional partnerships with premier Indian schools, in line with La Trobe University’s long history of establishing mutually beneficial relationships with government, private business, community groups and schools that deliver exceptional results. He added, that “Our Melbourne campus is the second largest university campus in Australia.  The University has been teaching Indian history, Sanskrit and Hindi since the time of its inception in 1967 and also has one of the largest libraries housing books and manuscripts on Indian history and language in Australia. The University Library was opened by the then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1968”.
