Anglo American Platinum Limited’s cultural exhibition showcased dynamic work

Visually captivating and culturally significant artwork from renowned South African artist, Mbongeni Buthelezi and Chilean photographer, Luis Hernàn Herreros, was recently on display in Gauteng.

Oct. 19, 2011 - PRLog -- Anglo American’s Platinum business (Amplats) and the Embassy of Chile co-sponsored a cultural exhibition at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Newtown, Johannesburg. This cultural collaboration showcased a portfolio of work from both Hernàn Herreros and Buthelezi, and was open to the public from 22 September until 6 October 2011.

Over his 20 year art career, Buthelezi has made his mark as an artist through the innovative and creative methods he uses to produce his work. His pieces are predominantly constructed using recycled plastic, and depict important cultural and historical aspects of South Africa including township life, self-portraits, as well as abstract pieces.

Amplats Executive Head: Corporate Affairs, Mary Jane Morifi noted that the exhibition is a fitting way to honour Buthelezi’s illustrious career.

“Mbogneni’s artwork is truly unique and creative, and his career has been defined by a commitment to real engagement on pressing social and economic issues. His art also has cultural significance, owing to the political undertones in his works, which provides a broader understanding of South Africa’s historical context.

“We are thus proud to display these cutting-edge and relevant art pieces in this cultural exhibition, and provide further exposure for an immensely talented artist.”

Hernàn Herreros has over 20 years’ experience in photography, and has already had his work displayed at numerous exhibitions throughout Europe. His diverse photography portfolio covers a wide range of subjects including mining, portraits, fashion, buildings, historic sites, landscapes, and corporate promotions.

Hernàn Herreros’ photographs on display consist of portraits of the mining landscape at Anglo American’s Chile operations. These broad and dynamic visuals illustrate the scenic beauty near the mines, and highlight the range of biodiversity in the area.

Chilean Ambassador to South Africa, Francisco Marabio said that Hernàn Herreros’ photographs encapsulate an important part of Chile’s heritage.

“Mining activities have as much prominence in Chile as they do in South Africa, and are a crucial aspect of Chile’s economic and political fabric. Luis’s photos are an appropriate tribute to this heritage, and offer a dynamic and thought-provoking experience for spectators.”
