Boundless Movement-A production celebrating the centenary of the 1911 Revolution

Featuring a 30-strong cast with guest artists Candice Yu and Liu Kai Chi

May 31, 2011 - PRLog -- (HONG KONG REPERTORY THEATRE) The classic Boundless Movement - by renowned playwright Raymond To with consultant Chung King Fai and director Anthony Chan - will grace the Hong Kong stage again this season! The most recent revival of Boundless Movement, a play that epitomizes the courage and persistence of the Chinese people, has won numerous accolades in 2009. This upcoming production, featuring special guest stars Candice Yu and Liu Kai Chi along with HKRep members Poon Chan Leung, Ling Man Lung, Chan On Yin, Ko Hon Man and Lin Xiawei and numbering more than thirty actors on stage, will recreate this historical epic for a third time for Hong Kong theatregoers. Boundless Movement will be presented at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Grand Theatre from 18th to 28th June. It is presented in Cantonese with Chinese and English surtitles. Tickets are now available from URBTIX outlets.

Boundless Movement premiered in 1988 by the HKRep, and in 2009, Raymond To revised his script for its revival. The plot centres on the Guangzhou uprising and the revolutionary martyrs of Huanghuagang, among them Lin Juemin, Wang Xing and Tan Renfeng. Although they came from different walks of life, each of them embodied the strength and patriotic spirit during those times of political turmoil. Raymond To, a master in depicting intricate human bonds, hopes that Boundless Movement not only educates a younger generation about history, but also resonates with the audience the patriotic commitment that marked China a century ago: “The 1911 Revolution was built on the failures of numerous uprisings and countless people sacrificing their lives. Nowadays we refer to many things in life as ‘win-win’ situations, but behind every success is sacrifice. And love itself also embodies sacrifice.” In the play, revolutionary martyrs Lin Juemin (played by Poon Chan Leung), Xu Baosheng (played by Ling Man Lung) and Luo Kun (played by Ko Hon Man) had to make tough choices between patriotism and love. Together they show us how such sacrifice helped to build a modern nation. Director Anthony Chan, artistic director of the HKRep, harbours great hopes for this large-scale production: “Although it’s been a hundred years since the Xinhai Revolution, everything is still closer to us than we think. Look at Hong Kong, where many historical sites of that period have been preserved. Our mounting this production is also a tribute; I believe this will touch many Hong Kong theatregoers.”

Praised for its dramatic power and emotional force, Boundless Movement is the greatest testament to the power of teamwork. It features a cast of more than thirty performing on a revolving stage, wearing costumes and ornaments based on period designs, along with two television superstars Candice Yu and Liu Kai Chi making their debuts. Sparks will surely fly across the stage this June.
