April 8, 2011 - PRLog -- When the Corpus Christi YWCA needs help with a project; they know they can always count on volunteer Lois Huff.  Because of this selfless devotion, Mirador senior living community is recognizing Huff as the first recipient of the 2011 Mirador Salute to Seniors Award.  Linda Breland, development coordinator for the YWCA of Corpus Christi, nominated Huff for the honor.

“Lois has been a great asset to the administrative office of the YWCA,” said Breland.  “She has helped with various projects at the YWCA, such as the YWCA Mission Membership, YWCA Yuletide Market and YWCA YWomen in Careers. Many times she will come straight from her morning yoga class at the YWCA carrying her yoga mat, ready to get to work on any project that is given to her. She has contributed her knowledge and expertise to help make the many YWCA events successful.”

The Mirador Salute to Seniors Award is presented quarterly to honor an individual who is making a difference in their community.  Qualified nominees are active adults age 62 and above who volunteer their time and talents to their communities, and who also exemplify leadership, spirit, and citizenship.

“The YWCA provides such a great service to our community, and we are so thankful for Lois Huff and the time she devotes to serving the YWCA,” said Cindy Waldron, executive director at Mirador.  “Volunteers are essential to making these programs succeed, and Mrs. Huff is certainly a stand-out volunteer.”

Huff started exercising at the YWCA when she moved to Corpus Christi 13 years ago. When asked to work on the Mission Membership project about a year ago, she was glad to say yes. She has worked in the past with the YWCA indirectly as a co-signer on a grant application submitted while she served at President of the League of Women Voters – Corpus Christi area.

“Volunteering allows me to help organizations that I believe in to better fulfill their missions,” said Huff. “At this point in my life, I am pleased that I can provide some time to help support the YWCA. Through volunteering, I hope to leave the world a little bit better than when I entered it.”

Huff enjoys helping with general office jobs, such as merging excel with publisher for table tents, updating and reviewing excel lists relevant to specific projects and doing some work with Quickbooks.

Huff currently serves as an adjunct professor at Texas A&M University Corpus Christi leading a discussion group for business majors who are taking Introduction to Professional Ethics. She is the former executive director of the Coastal Bend Bay Foundation.

When she’s not working or volunteering, Huff enjoys spending time with her husband of 40 years, Bob, and with her children.

The YWCA is the oldest and largest multicultural women's organization in the world. Across the globe, they have more than 25 million members in 122 countries, including 2 million members in 300 local associations in the United States. More important than the numbers is their mission to eliminate racism and empower women. They provide safe places for women and girls, build strong women leaders, and advocate for women's rights and civil rights in Congress. For more information, visit www.ywca.org.
