Why stop with recycling? Kicking your eco-consciousness up a notch

Canada’s DIY eco-expert, Linda Bodo, wants Canadians to take things to the next level by diverting items away from landfills and recycling plants completely.

March 14, 2011 - PRLog -- Edmonton, AB- It seems that nowadays the concept of recycling is really a ‘no-brainer’.  With Edmonton’s active participation rate in curbside recycling at an astonishing 89%, there’s little question that the environmental benefits of recycling are firmly entrenched in our psyche.  But Canada’s DIY eco-expert, Linda Bodo, wants Canadians to take things to the next level by diverting items away from landfills and recycling plants completely.

‘Upcycling’ is the act of repurposing and it’s a trend that results in significant gains for the environment – gains that can’t be matched by traditional recycling. Instead of converting an item into an entirely new product, you’re simply repurposing it as-is.  It means that you’re able to virtually neutralize your carbon footprint, rather than creating an entirely new one.

“It’s such a simple concept that people don’t realize it has an even greater impact on the environment than recycling does. And of course, there’s also the additional financial and creative bonuses to upcycling that people forget about,” reminds Bodo. “By sourcing materials from reuse centers and ecostations you also are able to create something innovative and unique while also cutting your costs significantly.”

Linda will be at the Edmonton Home and Garden Show March 24-27 at the Edmonton Expo Centre.
Her presentation times are as follows:
Thursday March 24- 7:00pm
Friday March 25- 1pm and 4 pm
Sunday March 27-1pm
She will be giving away kits to make your own Bottelier hanging pendant light with copies of her book the Art of Upcycle
