ECOSOC, United Nations awarded ‘Special Consultative Status’ to Agewell Foundation, India

Agewell Foundation has become the first Non-governmental organization from Old Age Sector in India to receive the Special Consultative Status with the ECOSOC of United Nations.

Feb. 11, 2011 - PRLog -- The Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) awarded ‘Special Consultative Status’ to the Agewell Foundation, an acknowledgement of its exceptional social work across India. ECOSOC is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations. It made the announcement of the award during the regular session of its Committee on Non-governmental Organizations on 9th February, 2011 at UN Headquarters, New York. Agewell Foundation has thus become the first Non-governmental organization from Old Age Sector in India to receive the status with the ECOSOC.

Needless to say, Agewell Foundation can participate in deliberations of the Council of ECOSOC and play a significant role in welfare and empowerment of older persons across the world with the support and assistance from global organizations, especially international organizations and subsidiaries controlled by United Nations.

The council recognizes the work being done by Agewell Foundation in India for last 12 years and expresses its faith in Agewell Foundation’s mission as well as in its capabilities to guide and lead the NGOs working in the sphere.

The Special Status for the first time to an Indian NGO from old age sector recognizes the fact that population ageing is a bigger challenge for India, as it is the second most populated country in the world and as per UN projections it will be most populated country in the world by 2030. Developing countries like India need to give special attention to old age sector.

Returning from the regular session of Committee on NGOS of ECOSOC, United Nations in New York, Mr. Himanshu Rath, Chairman, Agewell Foundation said, “It is a great achievement for our organization. Indeed, for many years, we have been raising our voice at various international forums that in India fast increasing population of older persons not only posing as a bigger challenge to the government but also to the society. Recognizing our concern, ECOSOC, United Nations has given Special Status to an Indian NGO from old age sector. Of course, this is moral boosting news for all of us at Agewell Foundation, its volunteers and associates spread across India.”
