Oct. 8, 2010 - PRLog -- The Bastione San Remy, or the Bastion of Saint Remy to English speaking folk, is located in Cagliari, a city that has a lot going for it to attract tourists such as churches and other monuments. But the Bastione San Remy is something that has always attracted tourists, as it is basically the essence of Roman Legacy in the city. It is located in the historic centre of the city which means it is easy to locate as accessing it shouldn't be a problem – although you won't be able to miss it, as you could call it an observation tower.

It is one of the most important fortifications of Cagliari and its name comes from the the first piedmontese viceroy, the baron of Saint Remy. The fortress was built in near the end of the 19th century on the ancient walls that date back to then 14th century. It is a majestic building that was built in the classical style, with Corinthian columns and made out of white and yellow limestone. It was designed by Joseph Costa and Fulgenzio Setti, and the construction was completed in 1901. The building links the three southern ramparts Mint, Santa Caterina and the Spur, which makes it join the castle district and the lower Villanova and Marina districts of the city.

To reach the top of the Bastione San Remy you have to climb up a flight of marble steps, which are called the 'Passeggiata Coperta'. Surrounding the building is a beautiful large square terrace called 'Umbeto I' that offers a great and relaxing view of the city and the bay. From here you can see various parts such the old quarters of Navy and Villanova, the new town, the plain Campidano, the beach poetto and the mountains of Serpeddi. The terrace is laid out on the medieval bastions that have been preserved; the northern part of it, which is called the 'Bastione Santa Caterina', also gives you spectacular views. The Promenade deck was opened in 1902 and at first was used as a banquet room, first aid and shelter for displaced people and was also the home of the first trade fair of Sardinia. But it was damaged by bombing in 1943 from the war, but thankfully it was rebuilt after the war. Also the walk has been restored and re-evaluated and made into a cultural space that is used for special art exhibitions.

Cagliari is home to some of the most beautiful Sardinia villas and if you were to go to the Bastion San Remy then it is recommended that you travel by foot because as soon as you hit the city centre you will be flooded with a load of transport. There are a load of tours that maybe helpful but can also add in the business of the city. Cagliari is a beautiful city with lots of monuments that add to the culture of the city but the fact that the Bastion San Remy stands head and shoulders over most of them.
