My engagement ring, an heirloom tale

Oct. 5, 2010 - PRLog -- Tomorrow it will be a year since I became engaged to my now husband and it got me thinking about the story that goes along with my engagement ring… I don’t always give in to sentimental thoughts like this, but this one is very dear to me and has to do with my family history (a subject I never tire of).

To start with it belonged to my paternal great grandmother  who owned it back in the early half of the last century, approximately from the 20’s or 30’s till the 1960’s. She lived in Shanghai and (most likely) had some other jewelry like it, so I don’t know if it was particularly special to her or not.

It was then passed to my grandmother, for a brief time. She in turn gave it to her son (my dad)…

My dad used it to propose to my mom, and thus it was my mother’s engagement ring in 1982. my mother kept it from then till 2008, but rarely wore it (my dad worried about her losing it, etc).

Then this story becomes partly mine… I despaired of meeting any eligible men my age… it was extremely hard to meet anyone in a backwater Shenzhen… I met my husband to be, in mid-2007 (after connecting with him via E-harmony) and by July of 2008 he knew I was the one for him. (In case you are wondering we met in person about 3 months after we met online, and most of our relationship was in person during dating and engagement.. and still is in person in marriage too!)

When we went to visit my family in July of 2008, my husband asked permission from my parents, both to obtain my hand in marriage and the coveted heirloom ring for me. You see, the ring was to go to me once I had found the person I wanted to spend my life with… He was “The One” in my mind and my parents knew as much and loved (and still love) him like their own son, so he was given the ring and me as a bride to be… if I said yes of course.

About a month later on a trip to a Hangzhou, my husband proposed to me and I became the next link in the ring story, and his lover for life… Because to his delight, and my own… I said yes.

The moral of this tale is only that even though a ring can last for a very long time…(”diamonds last forever“, etc), it is the one who gives it to you who matters most, so be sure enjoy the time you have with them!
