Aug. 29, 2010 - PRLog -- WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA — Prognition Corp., the physical therapy exercise software company that owns Mavenlive, recentlywas awarded two grants from Canada’s National Research Council for further enhancements to Mavenlive.

One is to develop the ability to collect outcome measures so that the efficacy of different treatments can be documented. The second is to develop a community for professionals to share knowledge, said Dr. Jay Winburn president of Prognition Corp.

Mavenlive is a web-based physical therapy electronic documentation software that prescribes rehabilitation exercises (http://www.mavenlive.com/), presents best practice patient assessments and automatically generates customizable documentation, reports and letters to referring doctors.

“Mavenlive is designed to make the implementation of ‘best practices’ easier for clinicians, and we hope eventually to expand its use into many healthcare fields,” Winburn said. “Evidence must be gathered to determine what truly is a best practice.”

The grant will make that possible. Collecting outcome measures is an ongoing need, due to new treatment modalities constantly being introduced.  Although randomized double-blind studies are the gold standard, they cost millions of dollars and are only done in relatively few situations, he said.  Health care workers currently rely on anecdotal evidence. For example, someone tells someone else that something seems to work.  Collecting outcome measures and analyzing them will be a major step up from anecdotal evidence.

The second grant will expand upon Mavenlive’s physical therapy software community to include aspects of a wiki, as well as a social community, Winburn said.

“Right now, the most commonly accepted number is that it takes approximately 17 years from when something is known for it to be commonly implemented in practice,” Winburn said. “This is a huge problem and different governments sponsor several conferences in any given year to address this issue.”

The fundamental technology that Prognition developed uses a filter constructed from information gathered during a patient’s assessment. That information is searched against all previous knowledge entered into the system to see if it is applicable.

If a bit of knowledge is applicable, it will be presented to the healthcare worker, regardless of whether it has been known for a week or for decades.

“This is a different paradigm of search that is not a keyword search,” Winburn said. “Unlike a keyword search, it solves the paradox of searching for what you don’t know.”

Being awarded these two grants makes it possible for Prognition Corp. to continue improving Mavenlive, making it increasingly helpful to those who use it in their physical therapy practices.
