Media Training Questions #1 – How Can You Tell If Someone Has Had Media Training?

Media training is a process. It is NOT about reading from a prepared statement, or memorizing an answer. What media training is about is using words in a way that brings the most impact.

July 29, 2010 - PRLog -- This is a media training question I get all the time.  It’s an interesting question for which the origin I’m uncertain.  I would guess that what some people really want to know is why some people seem to be much better at media interviews than others.  It’s a great question with an answer that deserves explanation.

The answer quite simply is you should never be able to tell if someone has been media trained.   And a further truth is that your media training should carry over into every aspect of your life.  Media training changes the way you communicate, period.  If you were properly media trained you will find the process of delivering information to any audience, even if that audience is your family, takes on new meaning once you understand the power of words and they way you use them.

Media training is a process. It is NOT about reading from a prepared statement, or memorizing an answer.  What media training is about is using words in a way that brings the most impact.  Media training is about finding a core message and then making sure you have PRACTICED and polished that message and then learned to deliver it in your own voice.  Media training is a process that involves a commitment to be better at using your voice to relay your message effectively.

Now, I would have a much easier time giving you detailed examples of how to tell if someone has NOT had media training, but I can pretty much guess you can figure that out on your own.  If you listen to radio, watch television, or even read any amount of either print or on-line content, you can see when someone is struggling with their message.  Sometimes it’s more obvious.  Sometimes it’s rather embarrassing to listen to, watch or read.  We have all seen or heard it happen.  The good news is it can all be corrected with some dedicated media training.

Those that find themselves in need of media training often don’t realize they needed it until after they have been compromised once or twice.  Many of my media training clients are wonderful communicators who know their topics cold, but can’t seem to tell us about them without needing 20 minutes and a coffee break.  It’s normal, but very correctable.

So, the answer to the question may remain a bit of a mystery.  I have never met anyone who couldn’t use some level of media training, and I have worked with many household names that benefitted greatly from finding their message in their own voice.  It’s an empowering process and done properly can be the beginning of all kinds of new opportunities for you, including selling yourself.  I’ll get to that point more in a future post.
