Recently released market study: Slovakia Power Report Q3 2010

New Energy market report from Business Monitor International: "Slovakia Power Report Q3 2010"

July 11, 2010 - PRLog -- BMI forecasts that Slovakia will account for 1.13% of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) regional power generation by 2014, and remain a modest net exporter of electricity to neighbouring states such as Hungary. CEE power generation in 2009 was an estimated 2,534 terawatt hours (TWh), representing a decline of 2.9% from the previous year's level. We are forecasting a rise in regional generation to 2,969TWh by 2014, representing a 2010-2014 increase of 14.4%.

Regional thermal power generation in 2009 was around 1,284TWh, accounting for 50.7% of the total electricity supplied in the CEE. Our forecast for 2014 is 1,455TWh, implying 11.6% 2010-2014 growth that reduces only slightly the market share of thermal generation to 49.0% - in spite of environmental concerns promoting renewables, hydro-electricity and nuclear generation. Slovakia's thermal generation in 2009 was an estimated 7.2TWh, or 0.56% of the regional total. By 2014, Slovakia is expected to account for 0.60% of thermal generation.

Gas was the dominant fuel in Slovakia in 2009, accounting for an estimated 28.6% of primary energy demand (PED). Gas was followed by oil at 23.4%, coal at 21.1%, nuclear at 20.8% and hydro weighing in with 5.5% of PED. Regional energy demand is forecast to reach 1,546mn toe by 2014, representing 13.8% growth over the period 2010-2014. Slovakia's estimated 2009 market share of 1.32% is set to ease to 1.30% by 2014. In 2009, Slovakia accounted for an estimated 4.72% of regional nuclear energy consumption, with a forecast market share of 3.91% by 2014.

Slovakia now holds eighth place in BMI's updated Power Business Environment Rating, ahead only of the Czech Republic. The neighbouring Central European state probably poses little threat over the medium term. The current score reflects the modest size of the country's electricity market and infrastructure, a low level of population growth, plus its high level of import dependence. Country risk factors to some extent offset the industry scores.

BMI now expects Slovak real GDP growth to average 3.5% per annum between 2010 and 2014, following an assumed 2009 decline of 4.9%. Slovakia's population is expected to remain around 5.4mn until the end of the period, and GDP per capita and electricity consumption per capita are both forecast to increase by 14%. The country's power consumption is expected to increase from an estimated 27.2TWh in 2009, to 31.7TWh by the end of the forecast period, while theoretical surplus output should rise to a forecast 1.8TWh in 2014, assuming 3.6% average annual growth in generation during 2010-2014.

We are forecasting an increase in Slovakian electricity generation of 40.6% between 2010 and 2019, which is above average for the CEE region. This equates to 21.3% in the 2014-2019 period, up from 15.9% in 2010- 2014. PED growth is set to rise from 11.9% in 2010-2014 to 15.9% in 2014-2019, representing 29.8% over the entire forecast period. An increase of 57% in hydro-power use during 2010-2019 is a key element of generation growth. Thermal power generation is forecast to rise by around 28% over the period, with nuclear demand up by 38%. Further details of BMI's long-term forecasts can be found later in this report.
