June 23, 2010 - PRLog -- The study also shows that 28% of women would claim they were ‘depressed’ to try and get a free nose job.

The UK’s largest cosmetic treatment review website, http://www.goodsurgeonguide.co.uk conducted research with 1,216 women across the UK to discover if they would consider undergoing NHS funded surgery to improve certain aspects their body and appearance.

The study, commissioned by http://www.goodsurgeonguide.co.uk, found that of all the women asked 59% would have a form of cosmetic surgery if it was funded by the Government.

The research shows that 32% of overweight people in the UK would rather gain additional weight and become ‘morbidly obese’ with hope to undergo surgery on the NHS, than lose weight through a healthy diet and increased exercise.

11% of the respondents admit to requesting weight loss surgery from their GP, while 19% claim to have never experienced health issues as a result of being overweight. Only 6% are ‘completely happy’ with their appearance and 14% would ‘never’ consider having a cosmetic treatment.

Of the women asked by http://www.goodsurgeonguide.co.uk,, 18% are ‘unhappy’ with the shape and size of their nose. 28% of these women would consider telling their GP that their nose was making them ‘depressed’, in the hope of a free cosmetic treatment to reshape it.

More than 1 in 5, 22%, would ask the NHS for a funded breast lift after breast feeding. Two thirds of which, 67%, claim it is because their breasts affect their confidence which is hindering their sex life with their partner.

Almost half, 43%, of mothers would take their child to the doctor if they were bullied due to having larger ears and request surgery funded by the NHS to alter them.

Commenting on the findings, Christiana Clogg, founder of http://www.goodsurgeonguide.co.uk, has said,

“This research honestly shocked me. I would have thought overweight women would aim to lose weight rather than gain it just in the hope that they could have free surgery. I understand that weight loss surgery may seem the easier option but it would mean putting your body under unnecessary stress. A healthier diet and increased exercise should always be the first thing overweight people consider not gastric bands and liposuction.

She continues,

“Being unhappy with your appearance and being picked on can cause low self esteem and approaching the GP for help is an option. If you are fully aware of the risks involved and the creditably of the surgeon, cosmetic surgery can change your life. The main thing I stress is that the decision is a personal one, and intensive research needs to be conducted into the surgeon, clinic and procedure.”

Notes to editors

Goodsurgeonguide.co.uk was launched in September 2009 and is the first website of its kind; users can visit the website to read or provide reviews and recommendations of cosmetic surgeons, cosmetic dentists, clinics and aesthetic treatment providers.

An ideal way to describe the website would be to compare it to TripAdvisore.com, however The Good Surgeon Guide allows people to leave reviews of cosmetic treatments, rather than holidays. Reviews can be left about any aspect of the procedure from the cleanliness of the practice to the aftercare, the quality of the food to the standard of the consultations.

The Good Surgeon Guide should be the first port of call for anyone considering a cosmetic treatment or procedure, as it offers inside knowledge from people who have already had surgery and this is key in helping others make an informed choice about where to go and who to turn to for their procedure.
