History of the Robot Vacuum Cleaner

June 16, 2010 - PRLog -- Back in 2002, the world had no idea what was about to approach. The new product of the season was the Roomba robot, created by iRobot and released on the world for the Christmas 2002 season.

This little roomba vacuum cleaner sold for about $200 from a number of companies. There was a lot of press about this little robot – but also a lot of doubt. How could a dinner-plate circle actually pick up dirt? How much could it hold before it got full? Would people really want to deal with this thing roaming around their home? How noisy was it?

The answer was shown pretty quickly, as Roombas sold by the thousands. Many were bought as gag gifts – but people found pretty quickly that the little tykes were pretty useful.

Along came 2004. At this point iRobot split their product line into two halves. One line was the much cheaper Roomba Red. This had a 7 hour charge time and was very basic in operation. It only cost $150. On the other side was the Roomba Discovery, at $250. The Discovery charged in only 3 hours, could run for 2 hours straight, and could even find its home base all by itself to recharge.

In 2005, they added in a scheduler. The Roomba Scheduler let people choose when the Roomba should begin and end its cleaning work. Not only was the new Roomba built in with this option, but they brought in a scheduler option that you could buy to work with any of the previous Roombas.
