June 9, 2010 - PRLog -- Whether you are using your hands or the sewing machine, it is important that you observe several safety precautions. It doesn't mean that if you are using the machine and have less contact with the scissors and with the needle, you won't get injured anymore.

After all, what could happen when you are sewing by hand?

Here are a few tips on how to avoid accidents when you are sewing. Heed them and enjoy a stress-free and safe sewing experience.

1. Wear a thumb or finger guard

When you are sewing by hand or even when you are using a machine, it is always good to wear a protective gear on your fingers. That way should something happen, there is a layer that will protect you from further injury.
One of the things that are available on the market right now is the finger guard. This is a plastic material that fits on your thumbs. You can wear them so that you don't get pricked by the needle while sewing.

2. Keep your things organized

Nothing beats being organized when it comes to ensuring your safety while sewing. Keep those pins and needles on the pin cushion. Don't let them lie around the work area where you can inadvertently sit on them or walk on them. Although they are flat and small, they can still pack quite a wallop when you aren't aware of them.

3. Keep the scissors in one place.

Like the pins and the needles, you can't let scissors lie around anywhere. Keep them in one place, preferably on top of a desk, in the middle portion or as far away from you as possible. If you have a box for your sewing materials, keep them there. Don't place it with the blade or the sharp ends towards you. Keep it away from children and never put them on the edge of the table. They could fall off and end up chopping your toes or nicking your skin.

“…Remember that scissors can cause major injury and even kill even when you are doing something as simple as sewing…” Added Romina Abrigo
