Automated External Defibrillators Help Save Lives

Automated External Defibrillators are an extremely valuable, life-saving device.

May 19, 2010 - PRLog -- Heart disease is the #1 killer in the United States. Individuals suffering from heart disease are at an increased risk for cardiac arrest. Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are increasing the survival rates of individuals suffering from cardiac arrest. Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart experiences an erratic rhythm and suddenly loses function. During cardiac arrest, the brain and other vital organs do not receive the blood they need to function. Death can occur within minutes and for those who do survive, both brain and organ damage is possible. Immediate intervention to restore the heart to a normal rhythm is required for a positive patient outcome.

An AED can provide life saving intervention by delivering an electrical shock to the patient’s heart. The small, lightweight, portable machine works by monitoring a person’s heart rhythm and recognizing when the heart requires a shock. To use an Automated External Defibrillator start by ensuring the electrical pads are hooked up by cable to the machine, the patient’s chest should be exposed and the adhesive pads attached to the patient’s chest as the diagram on the machine shows. Once the machine is hooked up to the patient, it can be turned on. The AED will monitor the patient’s heart rhythm and inform the rescuer if a shock is required. The Automated External Defibrillator uses voice prompts, lights and text messages to communicate operational direction. Some Automated External Defibrillators are designed to deliver the shock automatically.

Automated External Defibrillators are often found in public places where large numbers of people gather. Examples of public places where the machines are located include airports, sports stadiums, state and government buildings, malls, golf courses, casinos and medical institutions. While Automated External Defibrillators are designed to be easy to operate, it is beneficial if employees of places providing public AEDs are trained how to properly use the equipment.

Individuals at high risk of cardiac arrest might consider purchasing an Automated External Defibrillator to have available in their own home which could provide peace of mind and potentially be life saving. Automated External Defibrillators can be purchased without a prescription but it is recommended the patient discusses the decision with their physician. The physician can assess the patient’s risk of cardiac arrest and help determine if the purchase is beneficial. Other issues to consider before purchasing an Automated External Defibrillator include living arrangements (if the patient lives alone, the device will not be useful), the physical ability of the potential rescuer to use the device and the price. Cost of the device can range from $1500 - $2000 and are typically not covered by insurance.

Automated External Defibrillators are an extremely valuable, life-saving device. Odds of surviving cardiac arrest when an Automated External Defibrillator and prompt medical care are available can dramatically increase the odds of survival and recovery.
