Expats In France Love Visiting The Flea Market In Nice

One of the best parts of Living in France for expat Elizabeth Hill is visiting the Cours Saleya flea market in Nice every Monday….

April 28, 2010 - PRLog -- There are stalls catering for every taste, including jewellery, sunglasses, designer clothes for the ladies, military relics, stamps, watches and African masks. There is also a large selection of antique and retro furniture plus some fantastic artwork.

On the French Riviera, nothing comes cheap, and most things seem overpriced compared to the UK, but if you know your stuff, there are some great buys that are more difficult to find back home.

“There’s a wonderful choice of lighting fixtures. From enormous 60’s chrome and glass baubles, to a huge choice of chandeliers ranging from crystal and even delicately painted tin that I have never seen in the UK,” said Elizabeth.

“Another fascinating stall just sells discarded painted wooden toys and another little tin cars. The smallholders vary from regulars to new sellers who turn up on the odd occasion bringing lovely fresh items. Many speak little English, but you can try a bit of bartering and get a discount, especially late in the day when it has mellowed from all that lunchtime wine.”

The dealers arrive at 7am, but by mid-morning the market is in full flow and it continues until after lunch. That’s when the fun starts! Bottles of wine are cracked open and the stall holders get together for mini parties, often ignoring the potential customers.

The whole experience is made even more wonderful by the variety of buskers who add to the atmosphere of laidback sunny party vibe. Truly perfect for expats living in France.
