March 23, 2010 - PRLog -- you are experienced enough to do such repairs, following the suggestions below will assist you in repairing the power jack on a Dell laptop.

1. Remove the wire from both the 1520 laptop and the outlet.

2. Cut the wire at any point beyond the damaged area so that you can make a clean cut. It is best to leave at least a few millimeters between the damaged area and the cut to ensure that there is no damage to the wires you are going to reconnect.

3. Desolder the power jack from your motherboard that you have already taken out from the 1520 laptop. Both the motherboard and the Dell Inspiron 1520 Adapter jack have to be cleaned properly and then soldered again.

4. Carefully start to cut the outer plastic of both ends of the cut wire about a centimeter from the end. Do this gently as you do not want to cut the wires wrapped around the inner insulation. Remove the excess plastic.

5. Move the wrapped wires out of the way, and gently cut the inner insulating plastic only a few millimeters from the end. You will only need a tiny bit of exposed cord for this inner wire.

6. Hold the dell inspiron 1520 ac adapter power jack and carefully remove from the motherboard. When the power jack is successfully removed, clean the oxidized contacts with a sharp metal object. Apply a coat of solder to the contacts. Clean the Dell AC Adapter jack, and place the solders to all sides of the motherboard.

7. Secure the entire connection with a complete wrap of electrical tape, and test your connection.

Replacement Dell Inspiron 1520 Charger Details:

   * Input: : AC100-240V
   * Output : DC19.5V 4.62A
   * Power : 90W
   * Connecter size : 7.4*5.0mm
   * Item Includes : AC Adapter and Power Cord

With the right tool, however, you can check the output of your Dell AC Adapter and see if that’s the source of the problem. Follow the instructions:

1. Examine your hp dv6000 ac adapter. Every power adapter will have the input voltage and amperage requirements printed on it, as well as the output voltage and amperage rating. We’ll be testing the output of the power adapter, so write down the specs. An example would be this, taken from a hp dv6000 ac adapter:
Output – 19.5V….3.34 amps. We’ll measure the output of the power adapter with a multimeter — a very handy tool for anyone working with electronics. A multimeter can measure voltage, current, power output and resistance of electrical circuits by touching the electrical circuits or device with a set of probes.

2. Check the data plate of your hp dv6000 ac adapter to find out which portion of the plug is positive and which is negative. For example, on some Dell AC Adapter plugs, the outer shell of the plug is positive, while on others it’s negative.

3. Set your multimeter to the proper range for measuring the output of your hp dv6000 ac adapter. Take into account the voltage and the amperage you’ll be measuring. Consult the manual for specifics on how to set your particular model of multimeter.

4. Touch the probes of your multimeter to the corresponding portions of the hp dv6000 ac adapter’s  plug and note the readout. Compare that with the rated output of the Dell AC Adapter. If it varies significantly, replace the laptop ac adapter.
