Attention: News Editors

New Delhi, February 6th – There have been recent reports in the Indian press that Greenpeace has asked for Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, the Chair of the IPCC to resign. This is not true. Greenpeace is not calling for Dr. Pachauri's resignation. We believe the IPCC is an open and transparent organisation, and we trust it to manage itself. Pachauri and the IPCC obviously have made mistakes in handling this situation and should learn the necessary lessons.

Listed below are answers to some of the questions that you may immediately have.

Q. Is Greenpeace calling for Dr Pachauri to resign?

A. No. The IPCC is an open and transparent organisation, and we trust it to resolve these issues itself.

Q. Was John Sauven / Greenpeace UK calling for Dr Pachauri to resign?

A. John's remarks were made at a reception and were part of a much longer conversation. What was reported in the Times does not reflect the totality of the conversation. The IPCC is an open and transparent organisation and Greenpeace trusts it to resolve these issues itself.

Q. Does Greenpeace have confidence in Dr Pachauri?

A. Yes. The IPCC is an open and transparent organisation and we trust it to resolve these issues itself.

Q. Does Greenpeace have confidence in the IPCC reports?

A. Yes. They are clear and transparent, and the evidence is overwhelming. In some areas the science has moved on. As an example, the Arctic is melting faster than the IPCC report predicted. The tipping points associated with methane release from Siberia and the deep oceans may be closer than we thought. These are facts that make taking action essential.
